Money Saving Tips for (Kiasu) Car Owners
Here are some tips that doesn’t require any work or sacrifice at all, so you can spend your money on grooming with us (hopefully).
Don’t fill to the brim
Gas vapor can escape through vents in a vehicle’s tank, especially in our hot weather. I often see car owners shaking their cars hoping to squeeze in that little bit of extra fuel. Well, don’t. Singapore’s so small, petrol stations are everywhere anyway (more than ERP gantries). In addition, your car will be carrying a lesser load and thus increased fuel efficiency. Hey every bit counts!
Don’t turn on the air-con straight away
In Singapore, most drivers have never turned off their air-con before. But if you car has been sitting in the sun, using the air-conditioning to cool down the car is not the most efficient way to go about it. Lowering your windows and driving around will let the hot air escape faster, not to mention save fuel.
Just drive away
Don’t be idle. When you idle your car, it’s fuel economy crashes down to zero miles per gallon
Unless you are driving a vintage car, you don’t have to warm up your engine (even in the morning). Granted, engines have an optimal operating temperature but it won’t be for long till you reach it. Perhaps the only time that you do need warming up is when you are racing with F1 cars.
Don’t speed
With so many speed cameras around, this is just practical advice not to mention the safety factor but how does it save us money? At higher speeds, more fuel is spent overcoming the aerodynamic drag (the force that holds your car back). So the faster you drive, you spend more fuel per distance traveled.
Use the correct gear
The best way is to listen to your car; if the engine sounds like you are giving it a lot of stress, chances are it’s time to switch up otherwise you will have decreased fuel efficiency.
Check your tires
Check your tire pressure regularly and have them tuned for optimum effect at your nearest auto shop. Also, worn out tires are dangerous (not to mention less fuel efficient) so change to new ones if so.
